The College of Whispers is one of the two Imperial sanctioned magical institutions operating out of Cyrodiil. Their rivals are The Synod. Members of the College of Whispers are said to meet in locations known as Cynosures.[1] It is said that both the College of Whispers and the Synod are more focused on politics, and thus on guarding secrets, than actual teachings of magic.[2] Research performed by the College of Whispers on captured Dremora enabled them to learn that Dragons are not born or hatched, nor do Dragons breed. Dragons are said to be immortal, eternal, unchanging and unyielding.[3]

History[]

Fourth Era[]

In the early Fourth Era, after the Oblivion Crisis, the Mages Guild was disbanded. Both the College of Whispers and the Synod would find their origins in the aftermath.[1]

Umbriel Crisis[]

During the Umbriel Crisis, the College of Whispers was said to have the most accurate information on the flying city of Umbriel. The so-called wormies of the flying city were reported by the College to be more similar to Flesh Atronachs than to Bonewalkers, despite not responding to the same arcane stimuli.[4]

While both the College of Whispers and the Synod were involved in fighting the Umbriel horde, neither was of vital importance in defeating the city. Regardless, Attrebus Mede gave the credit of ending the crisis to the magical organisations due to their cooperation during the crisis.[4]

4E 201[]

In 4E 201, both the College of Whispers and the Synod made inquiries in regards to the situation of the College of Winterhold. Despite requests for direct meetings, the College denied them at the request of their Arch-Mage, Savos Aren, who believed that the reasoning for the meetings was related to the conflict between the two factions.[5]

The College of Whispers driven in desire to oppose the Synod, aimed to prove that research of Conjuration and Necromancy, both of which are banned by the Synod, are taught at the College of Winterhold. In doing so, aiming to prove that the teachings of the Synod are that of a political minority in the Empire, and deserves to be treated as such.[5]
