As the name implies, they are crimson in color, contrasting their green cousin, the Nirnroot. More than thirty samples can be collected from Blackreach, including those found in the abandoned laboratory of the renowned alchemist, Sinderion. After reading the journal found in Sinderion's Field Laboratory, or finding one of the Crimson Nirnroot, the quest, "A Return To Your Roots" begins. The quest mirrors the Oblivion quest, "Seeking Your Roots". Crimson Nirnroots glow and emanate a unique sound.

Biology

Glow and chime

Nirnroot is distinguished from other plants due to their aural glow and the chiming sounds heard when in close proximity to a patch. Crimson Nirnroot also possess this property, although the chiming sound emitted from them is slightly off-key. The Crimson Nirnroot saplings that grow back, while unable to be harvested, do emit a small glow.

Growth

According to the last paragraph of Sinderion's Field Journal, Crimson Nirnroot is attracted to water just like Nirnroot is. The Crimson Nirnroot often grows near fungi in Blackreach, which sustains the Nirnroot and allows it to grow away from an open water source. Crimson Nirnroot also regrows, unlike its common counterpart.

In Blackreach, there are at least 44 known locations where Crimson Nirnroot grow, including Sinderion's Field LaboratorySilent Ruin and the Derelict Pumphouse. They respawn after 10 in-game days, and are not affected by the Alchemy perk Green Thumb, as they only have one root. A Crimson Nirnroot can be easily located if its chiming is followed.
