Elden Root has two entrances. The southern gate connects Elden Root to Haven while the Northern Gate connects to the rest of Valenwood. Elden Root's outside has an Altmer Embassy located on the southern section of the city. The northern and central outside is where the Undaunted, Inn, and Stables are located. Since the city is built on Graht-oak tree everything is in the tree. The guilds, craftsmen, and throne room are located with the tree.
When the Ayleids fled Cyrodiil from the Alessian Slave Rebellion they settled in Valenwood and created multiple civilizations. The Ayleids built libraries and universities in and around the tree which eventually got destroyed in a Maormeri pillage.

During the Alliance War, Elden Root became the capital of the Aldmeri Dominion. Racial tension has risen in Elden Root when the Thalmor have hold on from making a Khajiiti Embassy. The Vestige and a Vinedusk Ranger investigated the problem and found that Ambassador Tarinwe was conspiring against the Aldmeri Dominion.
After journeying to Southpoint, the Reliquary of Stars, and the Falinesti Winter Site, the Vestige retrieved the goods needed to have Queen Ayrenn complete her ratification ceremony in The Orrery of Elden Root. Prince Naemon interrupted the ritual by stepping into the Orrery turning himself into a vile Ogrim. The Vestige defeated Naemon and Ayrenn continued her ceremony. She sees "A Dominion of Peace. The fair and just rule of Tamriel, beneath an Aldmeri banner. A future I hope to build".
The city was then made the capital of Valenwood a couple centuries later.
