The Elytra are large insect-like creatures indigenous to the Shivering Isles. Although there is a marked color difference between the northern variety found in Mania, and the southern variety, found in Dementia, both are similar in behavioral patterns and physical makeup.
Combat
Elytra pose a serious threat to the casual traveler, as they have two things that benefit them in combat.
The first is their uncanny ability to block weapon attacks. Through observations, it has been deduced that they utilize their antennae as an early warning system to detect incoming attacks from a blade or arrow. The antenna detect the incoming object, and they instinctively lift their arms to block.
Their second ability is the venom in their sting. This venom is very deceiving, as it has a very low potency, but its real deadly nature comes from its duration. Left unchecked, the venom can kill an average person over a period of some hours. Especially deadly is the Elytra Matron's venom, which can last much longer than the poisons from the lesser varieties of the creature.

There are several variants:

Addiction
Thadon will talk about the Chalice of Reversal, a cup that turns Felldew into an intoxicant. He's not entirely clear on the details, but thinks that one of his people or Lady Syl, the Duchess of Dementia, has more information.
