Azra Nightwielder is a mage who lived in a small village of Azra's Crossing during the War of Bend'r-Mahk. He is best known for being a pioneer of Shadow Magic.

Background[]

It is said that Azra Nightwielder was among the greatest mages known by the Third Era. He was the first to discover the nature of shadows, and developed a new type of magic later known as Shadow Magic. Because of the power of Shadow Magic, Azra was an enemy of those seeking to misuse it. His progress in studying shadows became greater than ever, and at some point during the Third Era Azra attempted to do the seemingly impossible ā€” to meld all his existences in shadow and strengthen himself through the use of Shadow Magic. As a result of the power he could wield, he was feared by others. Ignorant Redguard soldiers, who were opponents of magic and its practice in general, surrounded Azra in Hammerfell in attempt to thwart the shadowmage's plans. During that battle, something has gone awry and Azra lost control of his magic. Overwhelmed, he had to blast a hole in the ground and disappear. After the battle, a village grew around the hole. It was named Azra's Crossing in memory of the events that took place there. Many other shadowmages, like Pergan Asuul and Skelos Undriel, strove to take Azra Nightwielder's place since his disappearance.[1]

Azra's Crystal

Azra Nightwielder's crystal in Fearfrost Caverns.

Azra Nightwielder appears in The Elder Scrolls Travels: Shadowkey, where the hero encounters him inside a giant crystal in Fearfrost Caverns. He seemed to have lost his memory, and thus unable to recall his name. Luckily, he hasn't lost his power, and, with hero's help, restores his identity. The hero is then rewarded with the knowledge of Star Teeth, magical crystals needed to defeat Umbra' Keth, the Shadow of Conflict.

Azra is later encountered the last time after the final battle between the hero and the Shadow of Conflict, congratulating the hero on the victory over Umbra' Keth and disappearing. He hasn't been seen since that moment,[1] and his fate after the events of Shadowkey is unknown.

Staff Enchanter[]

Neloth[src]

It is less well known that Azra Nightwielder was also a pioneer in the field of enchanting staffs. Despite the fact that his techniques are considered rudimentary by standards of the Fourth Era, he is still viewed as a genius in the field. Numerous staffs that once belonged to Azra Nightwielder himself can be found in various locations throughout Skyrim. Master Neloth, the wizard of Great House Telvanni, is a collector of magical staffs enchanted by Azra Nightwielder, and claims that Azra's staffs have a sentimental value for him, and that every staff that Neloth has uncovered has led him to greater understanding.[2]

Azra's Staffs[]

Staves of Azra Nightwielder's making are involved in this quest in The Elder Scrolls V: Dragonborn.

Trivia[]

  • Azra's surname, "Nightwielder," is likely a reference to his mastery of Shadow Magic.
