"I am above the petty squabbles here. I have lived for far too long to be bothered with them."
―Garan Marethi[src]

Garan Marethi is a Dunmer vampire and a member of the Volkihar Clan. He is a senior member of Harkon's Court.

Background[]

At around 400 years of age,[1] Garan was once a member of House Dres, one of the great Dunmer houses of Morrowind. He recalls that during his time there he witnessed lots of political maneuvering, and sees himself to be above the constant power struggles and sabre rattling that happened frequently in Morrowind, and Lord Harkon's court. He is a strong proponent of magic and its versatility and admits he is baffled by the Nords' preference for weapons.

Interactions[]

The Bloodstone Chalice[]

Upon joining Harkon's court, Garan sends the Dragonborn to fill the Bloodstone Chalice from Redwater Den.

The Hunt[]

Garan sends the Dragonborn to a radiant location to discreetly kill a Dawnguard member pretending to be an either a Traveling Merchant, Traveling Bard, or Traveling Pilgrim.

Culling the Beast[]

The Dragonborn is asked by Garan Marethi to kill a boss level Vampire at a radiant location.

Protecting the Bloodline[]

Garan tasks the Dragonborn with killing a Master Vampire and his bandits in a radiant location.

Destroying the Dawnguard[]

Garan sends the Dragonborn to kill the leaders of the Dawnguard as he suspects they may be planning an attack now that Auriel's Bow has been retrieved.

"The Dawnguard will, no doubt, soon become even more of a nuisance now that Auriel's Bow has been recovered. We need to strike a crippling blow against them before they muster more men against us.
They've holed up in an abandoned fort in the Reach. Killing their leaders should discourage an out and out war with us."

Kindred Judgment[]

Upon completion of the main questline for Dawnguard, he asks the Dragonborn for permission to repair the entrance to Castle Volkihar Courtyard:

"Now that the Castle is yours, I was wondering, would you be interested in having the passage to the Courtyard restored? Harkon clearly never cared much for it."

If the player agrees, Garan Marethi will arrange to have the rubble removed from the doorway, allowing easy access to the courtyard and the portal to the Soul Cairn.

Dialogue[]

Show: Bloodline
Inside Castle Volkihar:

"I'm sure Lord Harkon is grateful you've returned his daughter."

I have a message from Harkon. "Lord Harkon. Remember your place. Now, what is our Lord's wish?"
He simply said "It is time." "Well, well. He wants the Chalice, then. You've heard of the Bloodstone Chalice?"
I've never heard of it. "It is a rather well-kept secret."
Of course. Hasn't everyone? "No. Don't try and impress me. It only leaves you looking foolish."
"The Chalice has been in Lord Harkon's possession for quite some time now. It is, when used properly, able to increase the potency of our powers. He has neglected using it for ages. If he wants it filled now, then grander things are afoot. This is good. Follow me. I'll take you to it."

While going to the Chalice:

"Lord Harkon has never cared to use the Chalice, relying on his more than adequate powers until now. This is an intriguing change."

After the conversation with Vingalmo and Orthjolf:

"Vingalmo and Orthjolf are Harkon's primary advisors. I'm sure they're quite surprised to learn that you're taking the Chalice. And here we are. Now, this Chalice needs to be filled directly from the bloodspring that is the source of Redwater Den. But that's not enough. Once that's done, the blood of a powerful vampire needs to be added to it. Keep in mind that Redwater Den has fallen into... well, let's just say less reputable members of society now dwell there. It's your choice whether to attempt to deal with them or force your way through. Hurry back. You don't want to keep Lord Harkon waiting."

"I'm sure Lord Harkon is grateful you've returned his daughter."

What is this bloodspring? "An ancient font, full of power. As much as it looks like blood, sadly it is not. Can you imagine if it were? We'd never need to hunt again. Still, its liquid is powerful, full of magic. Others have noticed, though they have never fully realized its potential."

Upon returning:

"I see you have returned. Lord Harkon will be pleased. You met Stalf and Salonia, I presume? Lord Harkon and I suspected they might follow you there."

They tried to kill me! "Well of course they did."
I killed them both. "As well you should have."
"Welcome to the politics of Lord Harkon's court. Vingalmo and Orthjolf both long for our Lord's throne, but cannot make overt moves against him. Each sought to gain power by using his underling to kill you and keep the Chalice for himself. By ensuring the Chalice reaches our Lord, you have increased his power over them, and at the same time deprived them of their little pets. You've done Lord Harkon two great services. Take what you've earned to heart, and be careful who you trust. Now, I believe that Lord Harkon wishes to speak with you."
What can I do to help? "Speak with Fura Bloodmouth. She has something for you."

If approached again:

"Hello there."

Something on your mind, Garan? "Now that the Castle is yours, I was wondering. Would you be interested in having the passage to the Courtyard restored? Harkon clearly never cared much for it."
See to it at once. "It would be my pleasure."
I don't care. Do as you like. "Then I think I shall do the repairs. Thank you for your time."
Stop wasting my time, Garan. "My apologies. I shall not trouble you with it again."

"If you'll excuse me."

Show: The Hunt
Inside Castle Volkihar:

"Hello there."

What can I do to help? "I've learned the whereabouts of a troublesome Dawnguard member. You will track him down and dispose of him. But please, do be discreet. Our aim isn't to stir the nest, just to skin a rat, reminding them that they are the prey."
What do you mean by "discreet." "I hope you comprehend killing better than you comprehend speech. Don't. Get. Caught."
Understood. "Good."

After killing the target:

"Do you need something?"

I've killed the Dawnguard masquerading as a Traveling Bard (Or another target). "Excellent. I knew I could count on you. That's one less trouble maker to keep an eye on."
Show: Culling the Beast
Inside Castle Volkihar:

"Hello there."

What can I do to help? "A cadre of lesser beasts has become a nuisance, taking too bold an approach to their feeding. The herd is becoming distressed, which makes it more difficult for us to slip in and out undetected. It is time to cull the weak."

"Ancestors guide you."

After killing the vampire:

"Hello there."

The Master Vampire at Redwater Den (Or another location) has been dealt with. "You have done well. It may seem cruel that we hold our thin-blooded kin in low esteem. But our needs must come before theirs."
Show: Protecting the Bloodline
Inside Castle Volkihar:

"Hello there."

What can I do to help? "One of the feral brood has joined a group of necromancers, presumably with aims to grant the gift to the entire lot of them. Needless to say, we can't abide that, as it would raise general alarm amongst the herd, to say nothing of the increased feeding competition. You are to destroy the feral creature before this small problem becomes a larger one."

After killing the vampire:

I have killed the Master (Or another rank) Vampire at Brittleshin Pass (Or another location). "Good. I prefer to nip budding problems before they reach full bloom. I trust it wasn't too much of an effort on your part."

Show: Destroying the Dawnguard
Inside Castle Volkihar:

"Hello there."

What can I do to help? "The Dawnguard will, no doubt, soon become even more of a nuisance now that Auriel's Bow has been recovered. We need to strike a crippling blow against them before they muster more men against us."
Understood. "Good. They've holed up in an abandoned fort in the Reach [sic] [Do not change this to Rift. This misspelled word is how it appears in-game.]. Killing their leaders should discourage them from an out and out war with us."

After killing the Dawnguard leaders:

I've killed the Dawnguard leaders. "Excellent. That should prevent the problem from escalating. Though they are a rebellious and determined lot. While you've severed the snake's head, the body will likely writhe a while longer."

Conversations[]

Bloodstone Chalice

Garan: "Excuse us. I need to fetch the Bloodstone Chalice." Vingalmo: "The Chalice? Why?" Orthjolf: "What're you up to, Garan?" Garan: "Lord Harkon's orders, Orthjolf. Calm yourself. Our friend here has been ordered to fill the Chalice." Vingalmo: "Really?" Garan: "Indeed. He's off to Redwater Den." Orthjolf: "Well, then... Best of luck to you."

Quotes[]

  • "I saw more than enough political maneuvering in my time in House Dres. I was tired of it then, and I'm tired of it now."
  • "I have never understood the Nord fascination with weapons. Magic is so much more versatile, don't you think?"
  • "Mortals aren't allowed to freely roam the castle. Not even you. Find Lord Harkon at once and ask him to please... 'correct' the situation." - If cured of Vampirism before Kindred Judgment.
  • "You are worth very little if you're not one of us. Serana can change that. I suggest you ask her to." - If cured of Vampirism after Kindred Judgment.
  • "After 400 years, you think you'll be the one to take me down?" - During battle.
  • "Find Lord Harkon. Let him know the time of the prophecy is at hand." - During Kindred Judgment, if the vampires are joined.

Bugs[]

This section contains bugs related to Garan Marethi. Before adding a bug to this list, consider the following:

  1. Please reload an old save to confirm if the bug is still happening.
  2. If the bug is still occurring, please post the bug report with the appropriate system template  360  /  XB1  ,  PS3  /  PS4  ,  PC  /  MAC  ,  NX  /  PS5  ,  XS  , depending on which platform(s) the bug has been encountered on.
  3. Be descriptive when listing the bug and fixes, but avoid having conversations in the description and/or using first-person anecdotes: such discussions belong on the appropriate forum board.
  •  PC   360   PS3   When asking if he may be allowed to reconstruct the passage to the garden, he may be stuck in the last sentence, and the dialogue option will forever be gone, it is unknown what causes this. If this bug occurs, leaving the conversation will still make him do it.
  •  360   He may not be able to fight if the Dragonborn sides with the Dawnguard. The only consequence of this is that it becomes impossible to loot his corpse.
  • When asked for the Dragonborn's first vampire quest, he may not recognize them as a vampire. He just says his standard phrase. It can be solved by typing the following command into the console: player.setrace <Dragonborn's race>racevampire. For example: player.setrace nordracevampire, if the Dragonborn is a Nord. After using that command, waiting 24 hours will have to be done, or else everyone will turn hostile.
