Murkmire is a zone in The Elder Scrolls Online: Murkmire. It is located along the south-central coast of Black Marsh, around the city-state of Lilmoth on the west side of the Oliis Bay. The region has different breeds of Argonian and various creatures, including the little-known Naga.[1] It was released as part of its own DLC on October 22nd, 2018 for PC and Mac, and November 6th, 2018 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.[2]

Background[]

"At the southernmost extremity of Black Marsh, the region informally known as Murkmire gradually slopes down from the interior uplands of the north until it fades into the ocean. Legend holds that the land once extended much further south before it sank beneath the waves."

According to Vicecanon Heita-Meen, Murkmire was one of three regions in Black Marsh to join the Ebonheart Pact at its founding in 2E 572 along with Shadowfen and Thornmarsh,[3] but this statement has been interpreted to be "more aspirational than descriptive" as Murkmire remains an autonomous region with no central authority.[4] Murkmire's environment is uniquely dangerous insofar as much of the land is home to dangerous flora such as Gas Blossoms, Static Pitchers, Catapult Cabbages and Lantern Mantises.[5] Six tribes of Argonians inhabit Murkmire: the Bright-Throat, Ghost People, Black-Tongue, Root-House, Miredancer and Dead-Water Tribes; each of which are varyingly receptive to the non-native Argonians and other races based out of the city of Lilmoth. While some tribes like the Bright-Throats are hospitable and peaceful, others, like the Naga of the Dead-Water Tribe, are aggressive and unwelcoming.[6]

In 2E 582, with financing from Kassandra, a wealthy Argonian noble from Cyrodiil and former slave, the treasure hunting and antiquarian group Cyrodilic Collections began organizing expeditions into Murkmire to recover relics from the pre-Duskfall era of Argonian civilization, intending to open a museum in Black Marsh to preserve Argonian history and allow it to be appreciated by the modern Argonians.[7]

Points of Interest serve as locations with unique side quests, while cities serve as the centralised areas with multiple sublocations and act as a hub for services and merchants. Murkmire features a series of zone story quests and unrelated side quests. Side quests are non-sequential and can be completed in any order, except where one carries on from another, and repeatable quests can be completed multiple times: weekly for arenas and trials and daily for all others.

Item sets are related armor and weapons that, when worn together, provide unique benefits. Overland sets can be acquired from world bosses, world events, delves, public dungeons and containers and as quest rewards; dungeon sets can be acquired from within group dungeons; monster sets can be acquired from the final boss of veteran group dungeons and Undaunted Enclaves; and crafted sets can be created at specific locations across the zone.

Skyshards[]

Six Skyshards can be found in Murkmire totaling in two skill points. The zone guide provides clues as to the location of each Skyshard, but many can be found simply by exploring and watching for the distinctive pillar of light they emit. Skyshards will appear on the map and compass when the Vestige is close to one and will remain discovered on the map even if it was not collected.

Achievements can be earned by completing specific tasks such as completing quests and discovering locations. Achievements are separated into categories and their progress is viewable from the journal. Earning achievement provides the Vestige a number of points, and some achievements unlock unique rewards such as furnishings that can be bought from Achievement Furnishers or collectibles.

Fish[]

Fish can be caught from fishing hotspots, ideally with the correct bait. Common fish will be caught most often while rare fish and alternative bait are rare catches. Each zone has unique rare fish than can be caught from hotspots. Slaughterfish and trodh can be caught from foul hotspots, dhufish and longfin can be caught from saltwater hotspots, silverside perch and spadetail can be caught from lake hotspots, and salmon and river betty can be caught from river hotspots. Chub, minnow, shad and fish roe can be caught and used as bait from foul, saltwater, lake and river hotspots, respectively.

Trivia[]

  • Murkmire has undergone various changes. Originally, it was announced as an Adventure Zone akin to what Craglorn once was, but was changed to a regular zone. Sometime later, its location was changed from being the western region directly south of Shadowfen, surrounding Gideon, to the far south around Lilmoth.
  • Murkmire takes inspiration from An Elder Scrolls Novel: The Infernal City by including locations such as Ixtaxh-thtithil-meht. Lilmoth is a centralized location in the first part of the novel.
  • According to datamining, it is approximately the size of the Clockwork City.
  • Lilmothiit once lived in Murkmire, but where totally wiped out by the Knahaten Flu[4]
  • There are no books that are a part of Shalidor's Library in Murkmire.
