Shrouded Armor is an enchanted light armor set, traditionally worn by the assassins of the Dark Brotherhood.

Craftsmanship[]

The armor is red and black, with many straps and buckles running down the chest and across the waist. It is the only set of armor other than the dragon priest masks and Nightingale Armor to feature a cowl with actual protective leather. The cowl has two variations: one with the face cover, and one without. Each piece is also enchanted. It seems that while Khajiit and Argonians can wear the shrouded cowl, it does not provide a mask to hide the nose and mouth of the wearer, though the maskless version allows the ears to be seen, while the standard cowl does not.

Variations[]

There are two other variations of the shrouded armor. One is called ancient shrouded armor. It looks exactly the same as the shrouded armor but provides improved enchantments and armor ratings. The other is the worn shrouded armor, which doesn't have any previous enchantments, thus potentially making it the most valuable, especially if one acquired the Extra Effect perk, since it can be greatly "customized." Tumblerbane Gloves, a unique variant of shrouded gloves, are also found in the Dawnstar Sanctuary after purchasing the bedroom part of the sanctuary during "Where You Hang Your Enemy's Head."

Acquisition[]

Joining the Dark Brotherhood[]

Joining the Dark Brotherhood automatically allows the armor to be collected; Astrid provides it after arriving at the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary for the first time.

Killing Dark Brotherhood members[]

Alternatively, it can be obtained without joining the Dark Brotherhood by killing Astrid during the quest "With Friends Like These...," or looted, albeit without the cowl, from the corpses of various Dark Brotherhood members during "Destroy the Dark Brotherhood!"

Additional sets[]

A few additional sets of this armor may be obtained by having the Perfect Touch, a perk of the Pickpocket skill tree. In the quest "The Cure for Madness," another Dark Brotherhood sanctuary near Dawnstar is visited. The ghosts which roam the sanctuary wear this armor. Killing them causes their corpses to disappear, not allowing the collection of the armor. However, these apparitions can be pickpocketed for the armor pieces with this perk. When the quest "Where You Hang Your Enemy's Head" is completed, an additional set of armor (minus the cuirass) can be found on the Mannequin in the Master Bedroom.

Trivia[]

  • All variants of the shrouded armor have a special property that adds a perk which increases the total armor rating by 25 when exactly four pieces are worn in any combination of body parts and variants of the shrouded armor. This means wearing two shrouded cowls exploiting the ancient shrouded cowl's bug allowing another cowl to be equipped on top of it will only grant the perk if another part of the shrouded armor is missing even if it leaves a body part totally unequipped.
  • The female version of the armor has significantly more red ornamentation than the male version. Also, the male version has an embossed hand (representing the Black Hand) over the stomach, while the female version lacks this decoration.
  • On the male version, the red designs are abruptly cut off around the upper chest. Based on the concept art and inventory design, this is likely because the hood was originally intended to descend farther than the neck and cover that area (though even if this was the case, the design flaw may still be present if wearing any other headgear, or none at all). Strangely, this flaw was not overlooked on the female version.
  • The sleeveless high armor rating variant of shrouded armor cannot be added to the Dragonborn's inventory, including if it is taken normally or added with console commands. It can be equipped using the console command player.equipitem 5abc3 and unequiped with player.unequipitem 5abc3, but it will still not appear in the Dragonborn's inventory when equipped.

Bugs[]

This section contains bugs related to Shrouded Armor (Skyrim). Before adding a bug to this list, consider the following:

  1. Please reload an old save to confirm if the bug is still happening.
  2. If the bug is still occurring, please post the bug report with the appropriate system template  360  /  XB1  ,  PS3  /  PS4  ,  PC  /  MAC  ,  NX  /  PS5  ,  XS  , depending on which platform(s) the bug has been encountered on.
  3. Be descriptive when listing the bug and fixes, but avoid having conversations in the description and/or using first-person anecdotes: such discussions belong on the appropriate forum board.
  •  PC   360   PS3   PS4   Regardless of whether the covered or non-covered hood is being used, there is no face cover present in the meshes for males of any race.
  •  PC   360   PS3   PS4   XB1   When worn by either Khajiit or Argonians, the hood will lack a face cover regardless of gender. With Khajiit it may also remove certain hairstyles or accessories.
  •  PC   The set of shrouded armor worn by Astrid may show in the workbench menu but return the 'requires perk' message even if one already has the Arcane Blacksmith perk.
    •  PC (Fix)   Completeint the quest "With Friends Like These" may fix this.
  • If a Bosmer, Dunmer, or Altmer are wearing the shrouded hood, their ear-points stick out of the hood. confirmation needed
  • Sometimes the worn shrouded armor set will not appear in the inventory but will still have weight when picked up. confirmation needed
  • Shrouded gauntlets, armor, and boots can be pickpocketed by the Dragonborn once they have joined the Dark Brotherhood from Ysolda in Whiterun when she is sleeping between the hours of 9 and 10 PM. However, it is impossible to pickpocket the cowl as there is a 0% chance of success. This suggests she is wearing it, however it does not appear that she is. confirmation needed
  • On Argonian or Khajiit Dragonborn, the ancient shrouded cowl can cause the cowl to simply disappear, and an Argonian's horns and feathers may disappear as well. Try to activate the ancient shrouded cowl first and then the normal shrouded cowl. In some cases, one can wear both of them at the same time with the shrouded cowl being visible. confirmation needed
  • A Khajiit Dragonborn's wrists may become invisible while worn. confirmation needed
  •  360   There is a chance female Dunmer or Orc Dragonborn chins will appear through the face cover.
  • The cowl may not appear on the Dragonborn's head. confirmation needed
