"Ah, Vlindrel Hall's a fine home, if you can afford it. The steward in the keep can tell you more."
Markarth Guard[src]

Vlindrel Hall is a purchasable property in Markarth. Like all of the homes in Markarth, Vlindrel Hall's interior and exterior are built in the Dwemer architectural style with a large golden door leading into the cliffside.

This house is the highest of all the homes in Markarth and offers a wonderful view of the Dwemer buildings, waterfalls, and surrounding mountains of The Reach. The Understone Keep is a short trip away, accessible along the upper walkway. The base price of the house is 8,000 Gold and the total cost with all decorations is 12,200 Gold (11,900 HF).

Acquisition[]

There are three methods of acquiring this home, all of which are listed below:

  • Speak to Jarl Igmund, who has two "requests" to gain permission to purchase Vlindrel Hall and a third "request" to acquire the housecarl:
  1. Kill the leader of a Forsworn group that could be located in several random locations, such as Bruca's Leap Redoubt or Red Eagle Redoubt.
  2. Find Hrolfdir's Shield (may only be done at level 20 and above).
  3. Assist five people in The Reach, which makes Argis the Bulwark the housecarl for Vlindrel Hall.
  • Complete the quest "Liberation of Skyrim," which allows for the purchase of this house from the new steward.
  • Negotiate the exchange of Markarth during the quest "Season Unending," making the new Jarl more open to allowing the purchase of the property.

Advantages and Disadvantages[]

Advantages[]

  • Even though the Abandoned House at the market place offers a free and handy starting point, Vlindrel Hall offers a luxurious dwelling with nice expansions later on.
  • Vlindrel Hall can be furnished with both an alchemy lab and an arcane enchanter.
  • Endon, the Thieves Guild fence, is located nearby for convenience.
  • It is a good choice for book collectors, as it boasts three large bookshelves conveniently located next to each other instead of scattered smaller shelves, as are found in Hjerim and Proudspire Manor. Also, unlike shelves in some of the homes like Honeyside, all three shelves are available for safely storing books.
  • It has quite a few weapon plaques.
  • Several collection quest ingredients such as Jazbay Grapes spawn in the entrance hall planters.
  • It is the highest house in Markarth and offers scenic views of Skyrim and the Dwemer architecture nearby.
  • It is not very cluttered compared to the other houses in the game, meaning clumsy players are not as likely to knock over items perched on top of shelves.
  • It is very close to several merchants.

Disadvantages[]

  • Smithing amenities are available, including a Smelter, but they are located across town with a distance similar to that between Breezehome and Dragonsreach.
  • Vlindrel Hall only has one exit, so discreet getaways may be difficult.
  • With the Hearthfire add-on, the children's room replaces the alchemy lab, although there is an alchemy lab in the keep by the Hall of the Dead and in the Hag's Cure.
  • Male adopted children do not enjoy living in Markarth, and will complain about it from time to time.
  • It has by far the worst lighting condition of any purchasable house in the game, as most houses in the city have the same issue.
  • It has only one mannequin. This is below the mannequin counts of the other purchasable houses in Skyrim, with only Breezehome having none at all.

Upgrades[]

A selection of upgrades are available for purchase from the Steward after the house is purchased.

Room Cost Description
Bedroom 800Gold This package outfits the master bedroom with a large bed, chest, shield plaque, shelves, display case, and other decor. It is a cramped room with the large bed and cupboards, so it is convenient that the kitchen is right outside with a cooking place and dining table with chairs.
Living Room 900Gold This package equips the home's largest and most central room with a large dining table, several smaller tables, three bookshelves, a display case, and other decor.
Enchanting Area 1,000Gold This package adds furniture and decor to a small enchanting laboratory adjoining the living room. This includes an enchanting table, shelves, a mannequin, two weapon plaques, two shield plaques, and four weapon racks.
Alchemy Lab 1,000Gold This package will furnish one of the small rooms adjoining the living room with the implements of an alchemist's laboratory. This includes an alchemy table, apothecary's satchel, hanging ingredients, and several shelves stocked with plenty of potions and herbs.
Entrance 500Gold This package adds floor mats, assorted pots, jugs and baskets, and two decorative planters growing various herbs and ingredients (including several featured in collection quests).
Children's RoomHF 700Gold This package either converts the alchemy lab to a children's room or, if no alchemy lab is present, adds the furnishings for a room for two children.

If the Alchemy Lab is converted to a Children's Room, the barrels inside the room disappear, along with their contents. If the Children's Room is converted back to an Alchemy Lab, (another 1,000 Gold), the contents that were in the barrels are restored, in the mead barrel.

Trivia[]

  • Vlindrel Hall shares a name similar to Sir Berich Vlindrel from the Knights of the Nine expansion of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, however, it is unknown if they share any connection.
  • Vlindrel Hall is one of the two houses that have the most luxurious housecarl rooms available in Skyrim, the other house being Hjerim.
  • The fourth dagger case becomes available after the housecarl's room is furnished (upon becoming Thane of Markarth).
  • Vlindrel Hall gets its name from the Vlindrels, a Colovian merchant family who were forced to abandon their home during the Forsworn Uprising during the Great War.[citation needed]
  • Vlindrel Hall is the only home that has only one level, i.e., there is no upstairs or downstairs.

  •  360   The weapon racks, plaques, and display cases may not work.
    • Cannot be fixed by the Dragonborn. It may fix itself after a while.
  •  360   PS3   The mannequin may appear next to the nearby table, with its arms crossed. This can be fixed by placing a main armor piece (e.g. a cuirass) on the mannequin.
  •  PC   360   PS3   After purchasing the house and all decorations, the mannequin might not appear.
  •  PC   PS3   Argis the Bulwark may not be appointed as housecarl and never appear in the home.
    •  PC (Fix)   Solution: Go to Vlindrel Hall, and forcibly spawn Argis with the console command (player.placeatme 000a2c8c) and he will assume his rightful position of Housecarl.
  •  PC   360   Sometimes when a save file that was made in Vlindrel Hall (or any other player-owned house) is loaded, tables, bookshelves, and other furniture will have disappeared. All the items that were on tables and in bookshelves will have fallen off. This is fixable by simply re-loading the save file.
  •  360   PS3   It may not be possible to buy the house after completing the quests for the Jarl.
  •  PC   Putting a quest weapon (e.g., the Rueful Axe) on a plaque may cause nearby items to become invisible.
    • It may fix itself after a while.
  •  PC   360   Weapons put on weapon racks may float in the middle of the room.
  •  360   PS3   Shields put on shield plaques can vanish from their place and never be found again.
    •  360   Solution: Sometimes reloading the auto-save when first entering the Hall remedies this issue with the weapon plaque.
  •  PS3   Display cases with dagger racks may be missing them; items placed in them manually may be on the floor upon leaving and re-entering the home.
  •  360   PS3   Placing a silver sword or scimitars such as Bloodscythe and Soulrender on a weapon rack or on a weapon plaque may cause the sword to fall to the ground, as if it had been dropped.
  •  PS3   Bedroom weapon and shield plaques and dagger case attachments may not work if the decorations are purchased after the items have been placed in the chest.
  •  PC   360   PS3   Putting books in one of the book shelves may cause the books to be lost.
    •  PC   360   After placing books on a shelf, leaving the Hall, and returning, the books are still present and can be read and picked up; however, when opening the shelf's inventory to add more books, the inventory appears empty, and upon backing out of the menu the books on it visibly disappear. Reload the last save/autosave, and manually remove the books one by one from the shelf before clicking on the shelf inventory, then place them back in along with the new additions. This unfortunately may have to be done each time books are added to the shelf after having previously exited Vlindrel Hall.
  •  360   PS4   The Mannequin may move as if it is a character standing still.
    • Reload the autosave after first entering the Hall.
  •  PS3   Adding armor to the mannequin will sometimes make parts of it invisible. The stored armor is still available if needed.
    • Solution: Put a ring or necklace on the mannequin, exit the mannequin menu, and go back in and remove the ring or necklace. The armor should reappear.
  •  PC   Some self-placed items might be displaced after entering the house.
  •  PC   360   The mannequin can be used to duplicate different types of armor and shields.
  •  360   If the bedroom upgrade is purchased, the display case and shield/weapon rack may become unusable.
  •  PS3   Putting a Dragon Priest dagger in one of the dagger display cases, may cause it to show up in the case and in the hand that placed it there.
  •  PC   360   PS3   It is possible to lose the option to purchase Vlindrel Hall in Markarth. If the option to purchase appears when speaking to the Jarl or Raerek and it is not selected immediately, it may no longer show as a dialogue option
    • Solution – The option to purchase Vlindrel Hall becomes available from the new housecarl of the Jarl, after a Stormcloak victory during the Civil War, meaning the Dragonborn must side with them and complete the questline.
    •  PC (Fix)   Another solution is to open the console and type setstage favor250 20. This will mark the quest for acquiring a house as completed. Talk to the Jarl and he will make the Dragonborn Thane of Markarth. They can then speak to Raerek about purchasing the house.
  •  360   If a bow is placed on a weapon or shield plaque, it may disappear.
  • The two pillars at the exit have glitched bases which flicker on and off, but this does not affect gameplay.
