I've been noticing bits of conversation between Deyvid and Jimeee regarding the "best" way to organize categories for TESWiki. It's really hard to follow these conversations when they bounce around between everyones' talk pages, so I propose we discuss the topic here -- primarily because I'd like to weigh in on the subject, as well. Deyvid, you commented that you "... think we should only use game-name prefixes when duplicates exist." You use the example of Bosmer vs Bosmer (Oblivion). You also state that you don't see any need to state the game name for locations such as Anvil because it only exists in Skyrim. Those guidelines are great for players who have played all of the games in the TES series and are familiar with the names, but I would like point out that a person that has only played Skyrim would not know that Anvil didn't exist in a previous game. When I look at the list of pages that are in the "Image needed" category, I have no way to know which game the page belongs to without opening the page to find out what other categories are listed. I guess I'm playing a bit of the Devil's advocate, here, only to point out one reason for listing the game name with locations. Another would be for formatting consistency -- it would put all Skyrim locations in one section rather than scattered throughout the alphabet with locations from other games. I, personally, would like to see more separation between Skyrim information and Oblivion or Morrowind information so that I know for sure what I'm looking at. Sometimes it's hard for me to tell -- or am I just not seeing the differences? I apologize for the lengthy post, but I would like to see some discussion on this subject. Thanks. In reply to that, thats why we have categories as such as Locations, Oblivion: Locations and Skyrim: Locations. (If that makes sense?) Im not sure if they help with what you're asking though TimeoinSay G'DayView my workSkyrim To-Do List 22:50, January 13, 2012 (UTC):
Well, the thing is: Jimeee and I were discussing categorizing pages by city. Right now, for Skyrim cities, each city has a category formatted like this: Category:Skyrim: Dawnstar. While for Oblivion, we have city categories formatted without the prefix, like this: Category:Bruma. My argument was that having the game prefix is unnecessary. Clicking on Bruma should instantly reveal that the location is not in Skyrim. And, personally, I think if we start organizing categories this way, we'll also have to organize pages with the same prefix. Not just for disambiguations, but for all pages on the wiki. Then, we'll just be a rip-off of UESP. --— Deyvid Petteys (bother \ stalk) 21:35, January 14, 2012 (UTC)::
I understand your argument. That being said, I would still vote for maintaining consistency in the way we organize the categories. I believe consistent organization makes navigation simpler for all wiki readers. As a side note, I don't think UESP has exclusive rights to their style of organization, and I'm pretty sure there are other wikis that do the same. The style is not uncommon. Of course, I will bow to whatever the consensus is. I just wanted to add my 2¢. GramsJ (talk) 17:56, January 15, 2012 (UTC):::
