"All the trees and plants, tended lawns and paths, are hymns of praise to Almalexia's name. It's humble work, sera, but I'm very proud of it."
―Gee-Pop Varis[src]

Gee-Pop Varis is a Dunmer gardener who cared for the plant life in the Temple Courtyard in Mournhold, where he can be encountered. He is the husband of Granny Varis and father to Trels Varis.

Background[]

Gee-Pop Varis is married to Granny Varis and has several sons,[1] one of them named Trels Varis, who is a journalist. When asked about Trels, he claims he stays in Kragenmoor in western Morrowind, although he lives within the city and produces The Common Tongue in his Secret Office. It is quite possible that he speaks sincerely as he tells the Nerevarine that his son was out of the country, as the journalistic activities of Trels Varis put him in danger of persecution by King Helseth, and it would thus be sensible to tell his parents a tale about him leaving the city to protect them and himself. Some information the Nerevarine can retrieve from other citizens also points in that direction, as they are told that all the Varis kids have left Mournhold to find their fortunes in the outside world.[2]

It might also be that he just invented the story or that he can not remember the whereabouts of his sons, as, according to his wife, he has become very forgetful in his old age.[1]

Personality[]

Gee-Pop Varis is very fond both of his work as gardener and of Almalexia, the goddess of the Temple to whom the courtyard he works in belongs. He thinks about the plants he cares for as hymns to the goddess.

Interactions[]

Muckraking Journalist[]

The Nerevarine can ask Gee-Pop Varis about the whereabouts of his son Trels Varis, who is the journalist they are looking for. Although Gee-Pop's information is not useful, threatening to harm him and his wife results in Trels Varis giving in on their demands.

10 Gee-Pop Varis says his son, Trels Varis, is a scholar in a private Temple school in Kragenmoor, out west near Cyrodiil.
20 Granny Varis says she has no idea where Trels Varis is right now, but Gee-Pop Varis says his son, Trels Varis, is a scholar in a private Temple school in Kragenmoor. It doesn't make sense that the father knows but the mother doesn't. I mentioned this peculiarity to Gee-Pop Varis, and he said Granny is getting old and forgetful. But I suspect they are not telling me the truth.
