Main article: Main Quests (Morrowind)

Hortator and Nerevarine is one of the last quests of the Main Quest in The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

Background

"Athyn Sarethi gave me a sealed package containing a message sent on behalf of Archcanon Saryoni, High Archcanon of Vivec. In event that I become both Hortator of the three Great Houses and Nerevarine of the four Ashlander Tribes, Saryoni invites me to a private meeting to consider my claims. Once I am Hortator and Nerevarine I should speak with the healer of the High Fane of Vivec, Danso Indules, to arrange the meeting."

Objectives

Walkthrough

Having been named Redoran Hortator, Athyn Sarethi gives the Nerevarine a sealed message from the Archcanon in Vivec. The message tells the Nerevarine that, should they be declared the Hortator by the Great Houses and the Nerevarine of the four Ashlander Tribes, they must travel to Vivec to speak with the Archcanon. In order to speak to him, the Nerevarine must fulfil the request within the message (which will also fulfil the Fourth and Fifth Trials of the Seven Visions).

Finding the Archcanon

The most challenging part of the quest for the Nerevarine is gaining entrance to the Archcanon's location within the Temple Canton. First the Nerevarine must speak to Danso Indules on the exterior of the Temple Canton in Vivec, whom will tell the Nerevarine where to find the Archcanon and how to get to him (she also warns that the Ordinators, although having been told that the Nerevarine must be allowed to see the Archcanon, will arrest the Nerevarine on site if they commit (or have committed) any crime).

Indules informs the Nerevarine that the Archcanon can be found in his quarters within the High Fane. However, the door containing the Archcanon is locked (with a 45pt lock) and guarded by an Ordinator. Therefore the Nerevarine must either use a stealth or use the locked (but unguarded) backdoor within the Hall of Wisdom.

Archcanon Tholer Saryoni

Having entered the quarters of Archcanon Tholer Saryoni, the Nerevarine must speak to him about the message. The Nerevarine must refer to the "Temple's doctrine" in order to progress the quest further, at which point Saryoni will arrange a meeting with the God Vivec. The Nerevarine is then given two keys (one for the door to his office, the other for the Palace door) and told that the Ordinators are still not entirely under Saryoni's control.

Vivec

Upon entering the doors at the top of the Palace the Nerevarine must then speak to Vivec (found in the centre of the Palace's only room). Vivec then reveals to the Nerevarine his plan to defeat Dagoth Ur, after the Nerevarine has agreed to all of the oaths and items from him. At the end of the conversation Vivec awards the Nerevarine Wraithguard (a powerful right handed gauntlet required to defeat Dagoth Ur) and gives them instruction on how to use it. Vivec then gives the Nerevarine his blessing and the promise that he will end the Temple's hostility towards the Dissident Priests and the Nerevarine.

1 Athyn Sarethi gave me a sealed package containing a message sent on behalf of Archcanon Saryoni, High Archcanon of Vivec. In the event that I become both Hortator of the three Great Houses and Nerevarine of the four Ashlander tribes, Saryoni invites me to a private meeting to consider my claims. Once I am Hortator and Nerevarine, I should speak with the healer of the High Fane of Vivec, Danso Indules, to arrange the meeting.

5 The archcanon is in his private quarters, and he wants to speak with me, but I must avoid confrontations with the Ordinators at all costs, because spilling the blood of faithful servants of the Temple will make a reconciliation more difficult. The archcanon has spoken with the High Fane Ordinators, but if I am a wanted criminal, they may try to arrest me.
20 The Ordinators guarding the High Fane know that I have come to meet with Saryoni. They warned me not to break the law, or they will take swift action.
25 Archcanon Saryoni accepted my apology for killing the Ordinator guard at the High Fane. He said it was time to risk trusting one another.
30 Archcanon Saryoni has suggested that the Temple's policy concerning the Nerevarine might change, and has arranged a private meeting with Lord Vivec. He gave me two keys: one to the private back entrance to his quarters, the other to a locked entrance to Lord Vivec's palace. He says the Ordinators are not under his control, and asks that I avoid them. Lord Vivec is expecting me, and perhaps I shouldn't keep him waiting.
34 I refused to accept Wraithguard from Lord Vivec. He dismissed me, but told me to come back if I changed my mind.
36 Lord Vivec asked me if I would accept Wraithguard, and he would not accept my answer of 'maybe.' He dismissed me, but told me to come back if I changed my mind.
38 I refused to swear my oath, before all gods and men, before all spirits visible and invisible, before my honor and Vivec's honor, to dedicate myself and Wraithguard to the defeat and destruction of Dagoth Ur, and the preservation of Morrowind and its people. Vivec said I would not find Wraithguard useful, because without my oath, he wouldn't teach me its use. He dismissed me, but told me to come back if I changed my mind.
40 Lord Vivec wouldn't accept a 'maybe' in answer to his demand that I swear an oath to dedicate myself and Wraithguard to the defeat and destruction of Dagoth Ur, and the preservation of Morrowind and its people. He said I would not find Wraithguard useful, because without my oath, he wouldn't teach me its use. He dismissed me, but told me to come back if I changed my mind.
50 I accepted Wraithguard from Lord Vivec, and I swore my oath, before all gods and men, before all spirits visible and invisible, before my honor and Vivec's honor, to dedicate myself and Wraithguard to the defeat and destruction of Dagoth Ur, and the preservation of Morrowind and its people. Vivec somehow taught me how to use Wraithguard. He then offered to give some explanations, or to let me go immediately, as I wished.

55  To defeat Dagoth Ur, Vivec says I must go to Red Mountain to recover the artifact hammer Sunder from Gate Citadel Vemynal, then the artifact blade Keening from Gate Citadel Odrosal. Then, with these artifacts and Wraithguard, if I destroy the enchantments on the Heart of Lorkhan in Dagoth Ur's citadel, Dagoth Ur will be destroyed, and the Blight ended. Vivec gave me 'The Plan to Defeat Dagoth Ur' to explain the details.

Trivia

  • The Nerevarine may kill Vivec during their meeting which will have several consequences:
    • Wraithguard will have to be jury-rigged by Yagrum Bagarn (this version will be left handed instead).
    • The Main Quest may still be completed, although the Nerevarine must complete the quest: Yagrum Bagarn and Wraithguard.
  • Vivec can give more information about Dagoth Ur and his minions during the meeting.
    • Vivec instructs the Nerevarine on how to use Wraithguard in a time bubble so that the Nerevarine feels no ill effects from the teaching. No text/explanation is shown about the teaching.
  • Vivec's library will become open for the Nerevarine to take books from.
  • Nearly all character's encountered will have an improved disposition towards the Nerevarine.
  • The Nerevarine's reputation will receive a significant boost.
  • Temple Quests will be reopened to the Nerevarine after this point.
