Jarrin Root is an ingredient in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. It can be used to make potions at an alchemy lab as part of alchemy. It comes from a rare, poisonous plant found only on the island of Stros M'kai. Its potency is such that ingesting the root may lead to nearly instantaneous death.[1]

Acquisition[]

"Here, take this — it's called jarrin root. All it takes is one taste, and the effects are quite immediate. The Emperor will be serving Sithis before he even knows he's dead."
Astrid[src]

Astrid will give the Dragonborn one sample during "To Kill an Empire" in the Dark Brotherhood questline. It is supposed to be used during the assassination quest, however, as this is the only sample that is obtainable, the target may be killed by other means and the root saved for later.

While closely resembling Canis Root in appearance, Jarrin Root has no actual plant data of its own and therefore cannot be planted in a garden or greenhouse in Hearthfire, making it non-replenishable without using Console Commands.

Effects[]

When ingested raw, it causes 200 points of health damage, enough to kill some characters, even the Dragonborn depending on their health.

Usefulness[]

Jarrinpoison

A devastating poison, made of Jarrin Root, a Human Heart and Blisterwort.

Combining Jarrin Root together with ingredients such as Crimson Nirnroot and Glow Dust or a Human Heart and Blisterwort will create a devastating poison. With a sufficient alchemy skill, the right alchemist perks and Fortify Alchemy enchantments, the damage done by Jarrin root poison can number in the thousands, making it capable of instantly killing many powerful characters or enemies.

Because only one sample exists, it is advisable to first complete the quest "A Return To Your Roots" as the reward will grant the active power Sinderion's Serendipity, a power which gives a 25% chance of receiving two potions when working at the alchemy lab. This makes it possible to create two vials of potent poisons.

In addition, by pickpocketing the Jarrin Root from Astrid and then turning it into a potion before talking to her, the Dragonborn can receive a second root. Note that simply pickpocketing it without using it does not yield this result; dropping the item results in it disappearing off the ground when Astrid gives you the 'second' root, and storing it in a container results in Astrid not giving a root at all. When done correctly, one can obtain four vials of potent poisons through this and Sinderion's Serendipity.
