"I've been pouring[sic] over some of the tomes left here in the keep. Interesting stories, indeed. Seems the previous incarnation of the Dawnguard had, at one time, some interesting toys. Arkay and I think it could be a great advantage for us. You should look into retrieving it."

Walkthrough

Florentius Baenius sends the Dragonborn to retrieve an ancient artifact from a radiant location. The artifact that is requested is random, but the quest can be offered by Florentius three times in order to obtain all three artifacts. The giving of this quest is random, and as such the Dragonborn may have to complete several other radiant side quests for Sorine Jurard ("Ancient Technology"), Gunmar ("Cleansing Light," "Hide and Seek," "Preemptive Strike," and "Hunting the Monster") and Isran ("A Jarl's Justice") as well as Florentius' other possible radiant quest "Rescue," before being offered the quest. This process will often repeat before getting the second and third parts of this quest (although it is possible to get the quests simultaneously, albeit rarely).

Upon retrieving the artifact, return to Florentius to complete the quest. The artifact can be kept upon completion.

Artifacts

Dawnguard Rune Shield

The Dawnguard Rune Shield has a +10 Bash damage effect against vampires and also creates, after sustained blocking, a minor sun shield doing +10 points of damage to the target. Using it drains the wielder's stamina.

Dawnguard Rune Hammer

The Dawnguard Rune Hammer places a fire rune when the bash action is executed.

Dawnguard Rune Axe

The Dawnguard Rune Axe does additional sun damage based on the number of undead killed. The weapon has a minimum undead count of zero and a maximum count of 100+.
