"Preferring to use their extensive knowledge of all things magical, they wield a might more powerful than the sharpest blade."
―In-game description[src]

Mages use their extensive knowledge and lore of magicka in every way which will help them to solve any given problem. Though most Mages tend to specialize into one school of magic it is not uncommon for a Mage to have significant skill in all schools of magic including the art of alchemy.

The Mage is a premade class.

Description and use[]

The mage is an all around class that, if used correctly, can be exceptionally powerful. A well-equipped mage can tackle a wide range of situations; whether it be a difficult lock or a stubborn merchant, magic can be used to overcome it. Although not quite as easy as being a melee fighter, a mage can be far more powerful than any warrior. The different magical schools give mages a great deal of versatility: destruction to obliterate foes, conjuration to summon daedric minions, enchanting to ameliorate apparel, illusion to hide themselves or trick others, and restoration to heal their wounds.

Being a mage can be difficult, especially for beginners. Magicka shortages can be a constant source of frustration, so mage players often stockpile potions that restore their magicka pool or fortify their intellect (which expands it). With diligence and caution, however, players with experienced mage characters may ultimately find it to be one of the easiest classes to play: players can hotkey healing spells to use in battle in place of healing potions; in Morrowind and Oblivion, mages can enchant items with Chameleon, effectively gaining permanent cloaking; alteration enables mages to breathe in or walk on water and open locks without lockpicks; etc.
