Mathieu Bellamont's mother was a Breton who was murdered by Lucien Lachance, an assassin of the Dark Brotherhood, when her son, Mathieu Bellamont, was a child. The sight of his mother's severed head drove Mathieu insane and he vowed revenge on the Dark Brotherhood, devising a complex and structured plan to bring it down, partly succeeding.

Background[]

"Have you heard the tale of Mathieu Bellamont, and the great treachery of Cheydinhal? Kill a boy's mother, and vengeance festers in the son..."
Spectral Assassin[src]

After his mother's death, Mathieu killed his father who had prayed to the Night Mother for the death of his wife. Lachance took interest in him and invited him into the Brotherhood.

Bellamont carried his mother's head with him throughout the course of his plan, until he took up residence in the Anvil Lighthouse basement, where he set up a small shrine with candles and the head in the middle. It was in this same recluse that he brought the dead bodies of murdered Brotherhood members to be burnt.

The existence of the head and Mathieu's obsession with it was a secret that he only revealed to one person: an assassin named Maria. When Maria expressed disgust over it, Mathieu promptly killed her.

Interactions[]

Following a Lead[]

The Hero of Kvatch discovers the head of Mathieu's mother in the basement of the Anvil Lighthouse. They can take it with them back to Applewatch farmhouse and, once there, they can drop the head on the floor. Doing so causes Bellamont to act strangely and say he is distracted by the sight of the head.

Trivia[]

  • Mathieu and his mother may be a reference to the "Friday the 13th" series, where the killer, Jason Voorhees, who lives in a remote area with his Mother's severed head on an altar, takes revenge on the counselors of a summer camp for the death of his mother; similar to Mathieu taking revenge on the Dark Brotherhood.
