Background
This Thieves Guild quest is attainable after the Dragonborn has broken any of the rules of the Thieves Guild, such as being seen attacking or killing an important client or members of their family. As a consequence, the Dragonborn is kicked out of the guild and generally shunned by the members of the guild.
Walkthrough
Speak to Brynjolf to obtain the quest and he will lead the Dragonborn to Vex, who will ask for a fee in order to be a member of the Guild once again. Optionally, the Dragonborn can also speak directly to Vex to begin the mission. This quest does not affect the relation to the members of the guild or any progress with guild quests as long as it is completed; however, in the future the Dragonborn will only receive 2/3rds of the amount of gold they would normally receive from miscellaneous jobs completed for either Vex or Delvin.
