"They have some of our boys locked up there. But with a little luck, we can turn that to our advantage."
Galmar Stone-Fist[src]

Rescue from Fort Neugrad is a quest available in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in which the Dragonborn must assist the Stormcloaks in rescuing soldiers that have been captured by the Imperial Legion and are being held at Fort Neugrad.

Background[]

Galmar Stone-Fist has sent me to Fort Neugrad. I am to meet up with some scouts who will help me break into the fort's prison. I will then break out some fellow Stormcloaks held captive there and take over the fort.

Objectives[]

  1. Meet the men near Fort Neugrad
  2. Sneak into the fort
  3. Free the prisoners
  4. Take over the fort
  5. Report back to Ralof

Walkthrough[]

Jarl Ulfric Stormcloak sends the Dragonborn to the Falkreath Stormcloak Camp to receive orders from Galmar Stone-Fist. Galmar says that he has learned that some of his men have been imprisoned in the nearby Fort Neugrad and has already sent out scouts to survey the area. His orders are to meet up with Ralof and the scouting party to infiltrate the fort. Once inside, he feels that once the Stormcloak prisoners are freed, the fort can be taken from within.

Before entering the fort[]

Ralof and his scouting party can be found crouched just west of the fort. Ralof explains that everything must go as planned as this is his first command after being promoted after the Battle for Whiterun. He indicates that the men have found a lake near the fort that has an underwater entrance to the prison to sneak into the fort through. Once inside he wants the prisoners freed and sent to the courtyard, at which point he and his men will rush in to help.

Sneak into the fort[]

Head around the right side of the fort and slip into the lake behind the fort. The entrance into the prison is at the base of the wall by a sunken boat. A novice locked chest is under the boat. The entrance is straight ahead from the chest and an adept locked chest is sunken at the cavern's eastern wall.

Freeing the prisoners[]

Rescue from Neugrad2

Deceased Imperial legionnaires following the rescue.

An Imperial guard will be sitting at a desk with his back to the prisoners. The key to the cells is on his person and on top of the chest next to him as well. Kill or sneak past the guard and release the prisoners. They will suit up in armor and can either be told to stay behind or to follow.

Taking the fort[]

Cut through the opposition and lead the men up to the courtyard as instructed. There Ralof and his men will arrive to finish off the exterior garrison. Ralof will explain that there are likely more men in the fort that need to be dealt with. Sweep the fort of all remaining men and kill the garrison commander in his quarters to complete the fort's sacking.

Conclusion[]

With the fort captured, Ralof will need word sent back to Ulfric of their success. Upon returning to Windhelm, Ulfric indicates that Falkreath has now been liberated and bestows the title of Bone-Breaker. He also makes the property Hjerim available in Windhelm for purchase so as to keep his best fighter close at hand. Ulfric indicates that help is now needed at the Reach Stormcloak Camp regarding his next target, the Reach.

  • After clearing out the fort and freeing the prisoners, the quest will say to return to Ralof. When he is talked to, he may only say generic Stormcloak responses, thus preventing the completion of the quest line. Fix this by killing all the Stormcloaks in the area except for Ralof. When Ralof is next talked to, he will complete the quest.
    • An alternate way to fix this is to travel to the Whiterun Military Camp, then walk with Ralof up until one reaches the bridge that crosses into Riverwood, then wait for one hour. Afterwards, one should be able to fast travel back to Fort Neugrad and talk to him to complete the quest.
  • Upon sneaking to the lake, the Legion guard on patrol will walk off and end up near Riverwood. If this happens, tell Ralof to "Wait in the courtyard." However, after killing the last guard, Ralof may only give generic Stormcloak responses.
  • Occasionally, the Legion Guards will disappear and the fort will instead be infested with bandits. The Stormcloak soldiers are still there, but will only wander around speaking their generic responses. A possible way to fix this is to clear Fort Neugrad of the bandits before initiating the quest. However, this may or may not work. Otherwise, write SetStage CWMission04 200 in the console to finish the quest.
  •  PC   360   Coming within a certain distance of Falkreath hold may cause the "Sneak into Falkreath Hold" objective to appear as failed, regardless of sneak level. No current fix for Xbox or PS3.
    •  PC (Fix)   In the console, type setobjectivecompleted CWMission04 12 1 prior to approaching the fort (preferably after having been given the objective to sneak in). Once the underwater cavern is reached, opening the journal will update with the next objective normally. Another way is to write tdetect, then sneak in normally.
  •  XB1   In some cases, simply approaching the fort from any direction will count as failing to sneak in, automatically failing the quest objective Ralof gives even if one remains completely undetected. This makes it impossible to complete the objective "Sneak into the fort."
  • After walking into the front entrance of the building and killing all the legionaries, as soon as the prison is entered, Ralof will appear nearby. (This can be after Ralof's troops never appeared in front of the fort.) Ralof will say to report the success and the quest will complete.
  • After getting orders from Galmar Stone-Fist to meet the men, they may already be at the fort and, upon arrival, the journal will say to free the prisoners. A way to fix this is to go into the lake and the underwater entrance and it will complete the "Meet men near Fort Neugrad" and "Sneak into the fort."
  • Sometimes Galmar Stone-Fist is nowhere to be found.
    • Solution: travel to the fort. Upon arrival, the quest will update, while only Ralof will be present in front of the fort. The quest will proceed as normal.
  • After freeing the Stormcloaks from the prison, upon exiting the prison, the soldiers' weapons may disappear, and they will begin to attack with only their fists. Anyone trying to dispatch the guards stealthily will be detected and, due to the weak unarmed skill of the soldiers, it is highly likely that one or more will die. Write SetStage CWMission04 200 in the console to finish the quest.
  •  PS3   When arriving at the Stormcloak camp, Galmar Stone-Fist may be hostile. A fix is by doing something which will earn an Eastmarch bounty. Pay off the bounty in Eastmarch and upon return to the Falkreath Stormcloak Camp, Galmar will no longer be hostile.
  • Sometimes, upon arrival to the fort without fast traveling, Ralof will be nowhere to be found and will have already spawned in the fort. This causes Imperial soldiers to randomly fire arrows at walls and at areas where the Stormcloaks should be spawning. When the underground entrance is entered, the Stormcloaks will already be inside, and they will be calling for help. When they are freed, Ralof will be talking and Imperial guards will be fighting on the outside.
  •  PS3   After talking to Ralof and beginning to sneak towards the fort, while sneaking towards any of the guards and attempting to use the bow, the arrows may plummet to the ground, no matter where or how aimed or fired. After being spotted and failing the "Sneak into the fort" objective, arrows begin to fire normally. (A potential fix for this bug is to first fire an arrow at the ground or anything else. The arrow should plummet to the ground as mentioned but all other arrows fired after should fire normally.)
  • Ralof may not wait at the map marker away from the fort; instead, he will continuously walk towards the main entrance of the fort, making it impossible to complete the "sneak in" quest, as he will always be spotted and engage the soldiers. This may also be a result of the Stormcloak soldiers spawning inside the fort instead of the rendezvous point.
  •  PS3   When the Dragonborn arrives at the Stormcloak camp and talks to Galmar Stone-Fist, there may be no option available to report in and start the quest.
  • If a follower, conjuration, or the Dragonborn gets attacked by or attacks Ralof, he will attack the Dragonborn on sight. This makes all the parts of the quest with talking to him impossible. To fix this, wait seven days.
  • Ralof and the scouting party may run to the camp near Whiterun instead of the fort, killing most of the people in Riverwood on the way through.
