"I will gladly sacrifice myself however, so that Tharn can pay for his betrayal. [...] You have done more than a hero could be asked. This is the final step of a long journey. Take heart and go forward with my blessings. I thank you, in the Emperor's name."
―Ria Silmane[src]

Ria Silmane was a sorceress, ex-apprentice to Imperial Battlemage Jagar Tharn, and head of the Elder Council before being murdered by her former master in 3E 389.[1][2]

Biography[]

Ria Silmane's Death (Arena)

Jagar Tharn kills Ria Silmane.

At an indeterminate time, Silmane once became the apprentice to Jagar Tharn, then-head of the ruling body of Tamriel: the Elder Council. After the End of Harvest festival that year, Tharn asked the council for relieve of his duties, secretly to plan his coup of the throne, claiming he wished to study other circles of magic. He then advocated his apprentice, Ria Silmane, to resume his duties as Imperial Battlemage of the Empire, and head of the Elder Council. The council fully approved.[1]

Jagar Tharn returned, and usurped all Imperial power in 3E 389. Silmane attempted to warn the Elder Council of his treachery. Before she could, however, Tharn used the Staff of Chaos and destroyed her corporeal form.[2]

Using her powers as a sorceress, she fought the pull of the afterlife. She instead appeared to the Eternal Champion in the Imperial sewers, as an incorporeal spirit. She would have gone to the Elder Council instead, but that would have taken far too much of her energy to appear to so many.[2][3]

She told the Champion of Tharn's betrayal. She then used magic to connect herself to them, so that she may appear in their dreams, and freed them from the cell—setting them free to obtain the eight shattered pieces of the Staff of Chaos.[3]

The more she used her powers after that, the shorter she could remain in the world,[3] so every encounter with the Champion became shorter and shorter.[4] In 3E 399, the Eternal Champion finally obtained all eight pieces of the Staff of Chaos. Ria Silmane then sacrificed what little energy she had left to cast an Illusion spell, changing the Champion's appearance so they may infiltrate the Imperial palace undetected. She then ascended to the afterlife.[5]

Trivia[]

  • It is written, and later stated by Silmane herself, that she was executed by Tharn with the Staff of Chaos.[6] In-game, Tharn is depicted as killing Silmane with some sort of spell from his hand.
  • According to Ted Peterson, Silmane's actor likely was one of the two female programmers at Bethesda: Jennifer Pratt, or Foroozan Soltani.[7]
