For other uses, see Sigil Stone.

A Sigil Stone is the object that keeps Oblivion Gates open. They are found inside the Sigilium Sanguis, at the top of the largest tower, in the planes of Oblivion. Once the stone is removed, it shuts the gate it was supporting and transports the player back to Tamriel, next to the now-destroyed gate.

Usefulness

Once removed, Sigil Stones are placed in the Inventory. They can be used to enchant jewelry, armor or weapons. Each stone can provide one of two possible effects: a defensive constant effect on jewelry or armor, or an offensive effect, that expends charges, on weapons. The constant effects never need to be recast; they also stack with newly cast effects.

With Soul Gems on weapons, multiple enchantments or a radius of effect can be selected; Sigil Stones cannot do either. Sigil Stones can give a slightly greater amount of Absorb Health (25 instead of 22) than a Grand Soul Gem, but much less elemental damage (25 rather than 40).

For armor, the outlook is much brighter. Soul Gems give a maximum of 9% elemental shields, but Transcendent Sigil Stones (albeit only available at and after player level 17) can provide 25% as a constant effect.

Variants

Sigil Stones' enchantments vary in effect and quality based on the players level when the stone is obtained. All stones have a name prefix which refers to how powerful the enchantment will be, in order from weakest to strongest:

  • Descendant Sigil Stone – Appears at level 1
  • Subjacent Sigil Stone – Appears at level 5
  • Latent Sigil Stone – Appears at level 9
  • Ascendant Sigil Stone – Appears at level 13
  • Transcendent Sigil Stone – Appears at level 17
  • Great Sigil Stone – Can not be used for enchanting, part of the Main Questline.
