"In some of Skyrim's darkest recesses, where the living fear to tread, the bones of the dead still walk. These Skeletons feel no pain or remorse... and deserve no mercy."

Skeletons are reanimated human remains that can be found in and about various dungeons, tombs, burial sites, and landmarks throughout the province of Skyrim.

Compared with other gamesEdit

The Skeletons of Skyrim differ from their Oblivion counterparts in that they, like the Draugr, have glowing blue eyes instead of the empty sockets seen in Oblivion. There are only two variations of skeleton in Skyrim, while Oblivion had many different versions of skeleton that were much stronger than the regular skeleton.

With the Dawnguard add-on, 4 new variants of Skeleton appear and sometimes take the place of other Skeletons found in the dungeons of Skyrim. Unlike the traditional Skeleton, these new variants are much tougher and they don't fall apart when defeated, rather they just fall over like Draugr. The new variant's appearances signify their abilities in battle, as listed below:

  1. One of the new variants of Skeleton wears a full set of Draugr armor and wields an Ancient Nordic Battleaxe or an Ancient Nordic Greatsword in battle. Despite the greater protection that the armor could offer, these Skeletons can only take a couple more hits than a normal Skeleton, although they can still withstand a power attack from a Daedric Sword and still fight. As for the loot that they drop, they will only drop their current weapon, maybe a small amount of Gold and a rare chance of dropping Bone Meal. Their armor is unobtainable. These variants function like heavy infantry.
  2. Another variant wears a full set of Ancient Nordic Armor minus the helmet and carry either an Ancient Nordic Sword or War Axe. Their resilience and loot is the same as the fully armored version, with the exception of the weapon difference. They seem to function as battlefield commanders as they are usually accompanied by several Skeltons and when he charges, the whole group follows suit.
  3. The 3rd variant wears Ancient Nordic Boots and Armor, along with a black hood. They are the new Mage class of Skeletons, as they constantly utilize Frost spells during battle, notably the Frostbite, Ice Spike and, on higher levels, Icy Spear. They also use Ancient Nordic Swords and War Axes in one hand, which can be looted of their remains, as well as a small chance for some gold or Bone Meal. Unlike the first two variants, this one is very resilient, even though they don't use spells like Oakflesh or Ironflesh, as they can take several hits from a Daedric Sword before going down.
  4. The final variant wears a full set of Ancient Nordic armor minus the breastplate. They use Ancient Nordic bows and arrows in battle, which can be looted off their bodies when defeated. They are the most resilient of all the new variants and can withstand several power attacks from a daedric sword before dying.

TriviaEdit

  • When the Dragonborn attacks a skeleton as a Werewolf, it will give off blood, and make the sound of flesh being torn, the same as any Human or Mer.
  • Skeletons are immune to all paralysis effects.
  • Skeletons are immune to the raise dead spells, unless the skeleton is fully intact (such as that of Gauldur).
  • Skeletons' low level make them ideal for use in raising the Restoration skill through use of Turn Lesser Undead. Its low magicka cost is ideal for this purpose.
  • Some Skeletons found in Dawnguard are considerably more powerful than the regular skeleton.
  • The Dragonborn may find many skeletal remains in dungeons. If the Dragonborn trips over the bones, the bones may be launched into the air, and the Dragonborn will take damage. The amount of damage taken depends on the amount of bones and the force with which they were hit.
  • There seems to be a another type of skeleton that is mage type. It also seems more resilient than the normal and can uses frost magic.
