Main article: Main Quest (Morrowind)

Sleepers Awake is an optional quest, that runs concurrently with the main quest progress. It is acquired automatically during the quest "Antabolis Informant." Attacks on the Nerevarine will start after the "Sixth House Base" quest is completed and once the Nerevarine sleeps in either Ald'ruhn, Balmora or Vivec City. The quest is finally completed when Dagoth Ur is defeated, which also ends the main quest.

Sleepers Awake Journal

The message received by the Nerevarine describing a dream.

disturbing dreams

While advancing through the main questline, after the completion of "Antabolis Informant," if the Nerevarine sleeps either in Ald'ruhn, Balmora, or Vivec, they have a disturbing dream about a strange and menacing figure. The second dream comes during the quest "Vivec Informants" and the last dream after the quest "Zainsubani Informant." If Caius Cosades is questioned about the dreams, he will explain that it may be safer to not sleep in towns for a while, and maybe they should look for a nearby base. Nibani Maesa and the other ashlander's wise women will also have guiding counsel regarding the dreams. These dialogues will enable a conversation topic named "Soul Sickness." This topic will then be available with many people across Vvardenfell.

The sleepers

Several people may walk up to the Nerevarine talking about the rising of Dagoth Ur. If the Nerevarine is a Dunmer, they will invite him or her to the Red Mountain and join the Sixth House; if the Nerevarine isn't, they will warn him or her to leave Morrowind. Each time they speak to the Nerevarine, their dispositions will drop; they'll attack if it becomes too low. These Sleepers can be released from this curse.

These people are the sleepers of Dagoth Ur:

Sixth house bases

Sleepers Awake - Dagoth

One of the cultists that must be killed in order to lift the spell from the sleepers.

After completing the quest "Sixth House Base" and sleeping in Ald'ruhn, Balmora or Vivec City, the Nerevarine will be attacked by an Ash Zombie.

The Nerevarine may find and defeat all four cultists responsible for the events.

Gindrala Hleran

Note: This part is also the miscellaneous quest "Strange Man at Gindrala Hleran's House."

Once Dagoth Gares is defeated during "Sixth House Base," in Ald'ruhn, Gindrala Hleran, a commoner wondering the streets, may be spoken to. She will explain that she cannot return to her home, it has been invaded by a strange man. The Nerevarine must now clear her house and complete this side quest, which provides further information on the cultists who are behind these events.

The cultists

The four cultists are:

Final blow

Although, there are no sleepers under Dagoth Ur's malevolent influence anymore, the quest will only be fully completed once Dagoth Ur is defeated during the last main quest, "The Citadels of the Sixth House."

the sleepers awaken

If the Nerevarine has previously been approached by an individual sleeper while they were under the influence of dreams, that sleeper will approach and initiate dialogue again after the spell has been broken. If not, the Nerevarine may find them and start the conversation with each individual. They will express surprise and gratitude, and the Nerevarine gains +10 increase in their disposition and +1 point to global reputation. Speaking to all fifteen awakened sleepers will total an increase in reputation of 15.

I had a disturbing dream. I can only recall one part. A tall figure with a golden mask led me among the dead as through a wedding celebration. I heard many voices, but no lips moved. I strained to breathe, but my chest didn't move. The tall figure spoke with each figure as he passed among them, laughing and joking, as if they were alive, but they made no reply. I tried to cry out, but without breath, my tongue fluttered in vain.

In my dream, a tall figure with a golden mask greeted me, saying, "There are many rooms in the house of the Master. Be easy, for from the hands of your enemies I have delivered you." It seemed I had died and could see myself laid upon a table lit by candles. But with my own hands I touched the figure, and the figure drew breath, opened eyes, and rose from the table. Then the room was gone, and the world filled with light, and I awoke.

I dreamed that a tall figure with a golden mask spoke to me, but I understood not a word. He smiled, and seemed pleasant, but when he reached to touch me, it terrified me, and I tried to escape, but I couldn't move. I tried to cry out, but I couldn't make a sound. The figure kept smiling and talking, but I felt sure he was trying to cast some sort of spell on me. When I woke, I couldn't recall how the dream ended.

In my dreams, a tall figure in a golden mask spoke to me. "Lord Nerevar Indoril, Hai Resdaynia! Long forgotten, forged anew! Three belied you, three betrayed you! One you betrayed was three times true! Lord Voryn Dagoth, Dagoth Ur, steadfast liegeman, faithful friend, bids you come and climb Red Mountain! Beneath Red Mountain, once again, break your bonds, shed cursed skin, and purge the n'wah from Morrowind!"

Gindrala Hleran says there's a strange man in her house, and he won't leave. She asked me to get him out of there, because he is scaring her.
  • Quest accepted
I told Gindrala Hleran that I had to kill the strange man who had invaded her house. She was grateful, and promised to tell everyone how kind and brave I'd been.

I spoke with one who called himself a "Sleeper." He called me by name, and said, "You cannot deny your Lord, Dagoth Ur. The Sixth House is risen, and Dagoth is its glory." He made no sense at all. I think he must have been mad.
  • Quest accepted
Sixth House cultists attacked me as I slept in my bed.
I told the Spymaster how Sixth House cultists attacked me as I slept in bed. The Spymaster said it may not be safe to sleep in town. Perhaps I should search for a nearby base, and attack them before they attack me.
I was attacked by someone called a "Sleeper," for no apparent reason.
With Dagoth Ur destroyed, his insane dreams can no longer drive the people of Morrowind to madness as they sleep.
