Solitude otherwise known as Haafingar is a major port city in Skyrim. Solitude became the capital of Skyrim after The Great Collapse in Winterhold. It's also the home of the Imperial Legion in Skyrim.

Description

Geography

Solitude is one of the most unique cities in Tamriel. The city is built on a natural arch that goes over the Karth River Estuary. The city has one entrance, which is located on the southwestern side of the city. The city is divided into three districts. The market district is the first area most people see upon entering the city. The residential district is located on top of the arch that makes up the city. The Blue Palace is located on the end of the arch. Castle Dour is the Northern most district where the Temple of the Divines and the military force of Solitude is located. The docks are apart of the city however it's outside the city walls.

Traditions

• The city celebrates the Burning of King Olaf/Fire Festival on the 14th of Hearthfire. The celebration includes burning an effigy which represents King Olaf One-Eye, who was burnt for betraying the city of Solitude.

History

Second Era

The Crown of Freydis or otherwise known as the Crown of Verity was passed from one High King to another. Jarl Svartr challenged the legitimacy of Freydis and a moot commenced. The crown chose Freydis as the High Queen of Skyrim in Windhelm however, the moot chose Svartr as the High King. This resulted in Skyrim splitting into a Western Kingdom and an Eastern Kingdom.

During the Tiber Septim's reign, the city of Solitude was known as Haafingar similar to the region it's located on.

Third Era

Main article: Solitude (Arena)

In the early third era, Solitude was under the rule of King Mantiarco until he married Potema Septim. Mantiarco loved her and Potema was given total control of Solitude. In 3E 97, after a series of miscarriages she bore a son named Uriel Septim III. Mantiarco later died three years later, He however disinherited his son from a prior marriage from inheriting Solitude and as a result Uriel Septim III became the new Jarl of Solitude. Solitude was the first step to the Ruby Throne for Potema the Wolf Queen.

During the Imperial Simulacrum, the Eternal Champion had at one point visited the city in their quest for a piece of the Staff of Chaos.

In order to expand Solitude's influence, the city annexed a few Imperial fiefdoms including the Island of Roscrea which were all by the Septim Empire and Uriel Septim IV in 3E 271. They later began to fund expeditions to places in and beyond the Sea of Ghosts.

In the end of the third era, King Thian married Queen Macalla of Dawnstar in order to expand Solitude's influence in Northern Skyrim.

Fourth Era

In the early years of the fourth era, Solitude became the capital of Skyrim when the former capital Winterhold was destroyed in an event known as The Great Collapse.

In 4E 201, the ruler of Solitude and Skyrim were High King Torygg and Elisif the Fair. Solitude had also become the Imperial Legion Headquarters in Skyrim. Torygg was challenged by Jarl Ulfric Stormcloak for the position of High King. Ulfric arrived to Solitude to seek the High King. Torygg had thought that Ulfric would come to argue about independence with an open-mind. Unbeknownst to Torygg and his court, Ulfric came for a challenge and slew Torygg with the power of the Thu'um. In the end, this caused the Skyrim Civil War to occur with the Imperial Legion siding with Solitude and the Stormcloak Rebellion siding with Windhelm. Elisif became the new Jarl of Solitude and seeks to become High Queen of Skyrim.

The Dark Brotherhood of Skyrim had taken a contract to assassinate the current Emperor at the time Emperor Titus Mede II. The first targets however were, Vittoria Vici and Officer Gaius Maro. Eventually, Titus Mede II was assassinated aboard The Katariah just before he had the chance to escape Skyrim alive.
