Walkthrough[]

When approaching Skald's Retreat, the Vestige will come across a spirit called Engling. Engling will appear confused and does not understand what is going on, but she will tell you to speak to her mentor Sage Odana.

Cross the bridge into the Skald's Retreat. There, you will find the spirit of Sage Odana standing among a ton of seemingly dead bodies. She will tell you that Engling caused this situation by singing a song that opened a rift between Tamriel and Quagmire, the realm of Vaermina, the daedric prince of nightmares. Vaermina turned the island into a nightmarish hellscape and the people into dreamers. Odana thinks that the effects can be undone with another song, specifically the Song of Sinmur. She will ask you to learn the lyrics and tune of this song on various parts of the island. When you navigate the island, do not try to take shortcuts through the water, as it can be hard to find a place where you can climb back on land.

Along the way, you may come across a glimmering book. Reading this book will summon the spirit of Loremaster Bragur, who will give you the quest Guard the Knowledge. That quest takes place in the same areas as this one, so it is efficient to do both simultaneously. Either way, the first lyric can be learned from Alldin, who is hiding behind some rocks around the center of the island. Just east of Alldin, you will find Hjelda, who can teach you the tune. Head further east onto the docks and you will find Raevild Snowraven, who will teach you the third lyric. Finally, the second lyric can be found in the library on the northwestern side of the island, by speaking to Knudikur. Alternatively, the lyrics and tune can be gathered in any other order.

After you have collected all the parts of the song, head to the Skald Manor in the north of the island and speak with Sage Odana. She will ask you to convince the only other waking person on the island, a drunk named Maraamur, to help you. He will be upstairs. While heading over to him, make sure to pick up the copy of The Wandering Skald lying on the table. Speak with Maraamur and he will agree to help you if you teach him the tune. Teach it to him by playing the lutes on the wall. You will want to start with the regular strung lute, then the low strung one and finally the high strung one. After teaching Maraamur the tune, speak with him again to teach him the lyrics. Now that he knows the song, he will tell you that he will need Engling's lute to break the spell.

Head back to where you first met Sage Odana. The lute should be there, on the platform by Engling's sleeping body. After you have it, head to the southwest of the island and deliver the lute to Maraamur. Along the way, Vearmina herself will issue a threat to you. Once you have given him the lute, Maraamur will start performing the song. Vaermina will send some of her nightmares to interrupt him, so you will have to defend him. After he is done, a newly awakened Engling will tell you that it worked, then head off to the stage where you found her lute. Speak with her there to finish the quest.
