The Steel Shield is a piece of heavy armor and part of the steel armor set found in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Locations[]
Unenchanted shields will begin to appear throughout Skyrim at level 2 and enchanted variants can be found at level 3. These locations include:
- Blacksmiths and general goods merchants.
- Found as random loot at level 3 or higher in chests or as a world item.
- Carried by bandit chiefs, hired thugs and Silver Hand members.
Variants[]
- Aela's Shield - quest item for Aela the Huntress.
- Hrolfdir's Shield - quest item for Igmund.
Smithing[]
Steel Shields require the Steel Smithing perk to create. It can be forged at a blacksmith's forge with the following components:
- 1 × Leather Strips
- 3 × Steel Ingots
- 1 × Iron Ingot
It can be upgraded with a steel ingot at a workbench and also benefits from the Steel Smithing perk, which doubles the improvement.

- If the Dragonborn has not given Aela the Huntress her shield, Aela's Shield, during the quest "Take Up Arms" for the Companions, the game will register all Steel Shields as Aela's shield, therefore not allowing one to remove them from your inventory. Placing the shield on a shield display in one's house seems to allow one to remove them from their inventory.
