Locations
Edit
Unenchanted shields will begin to appear throughout Skyrim at level 2 and enchanted variants can be found at level 3. These locations include:
- Blacksmiths and General Goods Merchants.
- Found as random loot in chests or as a world item.
- Carried by Bandit Chiefs, Hired Thugs and Silver Hand members
Variants
Edit
- Aela's Shield - quest item for Aela the Huntress.
- Hrolfdir's Shield - quest item for Igmund.
Smithing
Edit
A Steel Shield requires a Smithing level of 20 and the Steel Smithing perk to create. It can be forged at a blacksmith's forge with the following components:
- 1 × Leather Strips
- 3 × Steel Ingots
- 1 × Iron Ingot
It can be upgraded with a Steel Ingot at a workbench and also benefits from the Steel Smithing perk, which doubles the improvement.
Bugs
Edit
- If you have not given Aela the Huntress her shield, Aela's Shield, during the quest "Take Up Arms" for the Companions, the game will register all Steel Shields as Aela's shield, therefore not allowing you to remove them from your inventory. Placing the shield on a shield display in your house seems to allow you to remove them from your inventory.
