After the Great War, the The College of Whispers emerged as an officially recognized institution of magic. Springing up from the dismantled Mages Guild, the College is rivaled by The Synod,[1] another Imperially recognized faction of magic. The College is known to have a cynosure at Water's Edge.

The college is known to summon Dremora for questioning. Through their research, the Dremora revealed that there is no credible story of how dragons originated; they just were, and are eternal, immortal, unchanging, and unyielding. They are not born or hatched. They do not mate or breed. There are no known examples of dragon eggs or dragonlings.[2] (This somewhat conflicts with Daggerfall, which had Dragonlings but the Dragonlings in Daggerfall could just be a different species of flying lizard that earned the nickname "Dragonling")

Unlike the Synod, their rivals, who oppose the study of Conjuration and Necromancy, the College of Whispers deliberately focus their research on it. It is believed that they turned toward the College of Winterhold in Skyrim, hoping they also supported this type of research, so they may claim that the Synod is a political minority in the Empire and should be treated as such.[1]

  • J'zargo is heard saying that The College of Whispers is "... too busy guarding secrets," this lack of exposure of information is most likely due to the College's size and their extensive knowledge on the Oblivion Crisis.
