Walkthrough[]

When you come to the Hoarfrost Downs, you may stumble across an argument between Captain Thayer and her superior, General Tibbin over rectuitment. Talk to Thayer afterward and she will tell you that the guard here is understaffed and rectuitment has been very slow since the start of Montclair's war. She will lose her position if she cannot get new recruits, so she will ask you to help her talk some people into joining. She will point you toward Martin Dathieu, who is currently in the stocks but will be released if he joins up.

Head over to the stocks and talk to Martin. He will refuse to join the guard, as he fears he will get killed and his family will starve without him. He also thinks there is no evidence against him and that he will be a free man again soon. Take this information to Deputy Ascenge, who is standing nearby. He will say that there is actually evidence that Martin committed the crime, and that the man who would have vouched for Martin's innocence was probably also involved. From here, there are three people you can talk to to get more information. You can talk to Olivier who is east of the fighters guild, or you can talk to Martin's mother or sister, both of which are at the inn.

If you talk to Olivier, he will tell you that they did in fact commit the crime, but that he will not vouch for Martin. He can be intimidated to vouch for Martin's innocence though. If you do this, [?]. if you do not, you will get nothing out of this conversation. Either way, Martin's sister and mother will be in the inn. If you talk to the sister, she will refuse to tell you if the family's financial situation is really that dire, but you can persuade her to tell you this. If you do so, she will tell you that he has only ever been a drain on their finances, and that it would be better if he enlisted with the guard. The last person to talk to is Martin's mother, on the second floor. She will say that she thinks Martin should join the guard and make something of his life like his father, General Dathieu. Martin thinks his father died without honour in King Ranser's war, but if you have completed the quest "A Traitor's Tale," you can tell the mother that he died with honour, and she will ask you to tell Martin that.

After talking to all of these people, head back to Martin. You can present him with any of the reasons you got from the people you talked to, and he will agree to enlist with the guard. After this, talk to Captain Thayer again to finish the quest and start the next one, "The Bandit."
