  • I've already done the quest Waking Nightmare, but when i try to talk to the jarl he doesnt offer the thane position.  I've even helped three people already with the quests selling iron ore to Beitild, giving Karl a drink, and selling firewood to Aeri at Anga's Mill.  What should I do?

      Loading editor
    • Do the quests you explain complete "Assist the people of the Pale" quest line? If no than you will need to complete that quest line before the offer of Thane is given. It actually is what I am working on right now.

    • Yes,  But when I go to talk to the jarl the only 2 things i can ask him are: "Is Dawnstar prepared for dragon attaks?" and "How is Dawnstar Faring in the war?"

        Loading editor
    • I may be having same issue, I have in my misc. quests: Collect bounty from Skald and it will not go away,  The 2 things I can ask are the same as yours. Are you on PS3? I am and thinking this might be a glitch. which for me is no biggie as you do not need to be  thane to own property. as I have already purchased Windstad Manor.

    • I have a PS3, but im not sure if other PS3 users have the same problem.

I want the Dawnstar house so i can have all 3 properties and one of each kind of house.

    • Well I have another issue... well not for me... but according to the game i have to complete the "Help 3 people in the pass" quest to be Thane,... welll somewhere and somehow I became Thane without that quest completed and I have no idea how I did it, I have forgotten .... I did not think I was thane, but have the property. But apparently i am the thane lol ...

    • Wait, WHAT?!  How did you become thane?  I didnt even get the quest "Help 3 people in the pass".  And who do you get the property from anyways?

        Loading editor
    • Did you get the quest immediately after "Waking Nightmare"?  And if so who, or did it just pop up?

Sorry "Assist the people of the pale" is the quest i was talking about....  I did waking nightmare so long ago... but "Assist the people of the pale" only c ame up I believe around the time when I purchased the property... really at this point I am absolutely no help to you, as I am extream;ly confused as to how I have become thane without the "assist the people of the pale " complete.... extreamly confused... O_o

    • Who did you buy the property from?

    • The yarls carl or the yarl I believe.

    • I just realized that i have to be level 22 to buy a house and become thane.  I feel really stupid right now.... And thanks.

    • i tried to become thane by doing the nightmare quest and i also am a stormcloak, but all he does is just walk around

    • If you use the console command player.setrelationshiprank NPCId 4, it will allow you to become thane.

        Loading editor
    • I think if you 'Aren't' level 20 you can't become thane because you need to slay a giant in order to do that

        Loading editor
    • I'm level 22, nightmare quest done, killed three giants as per bounty, helped everyone in the town, and still don't get any topic about becoming Thane. The glitch is bad with this one. I shall resort to the console command.

    • You need to be, or i mean, you HAVE to be lvl 22, if you are´nt yet, keep leveling.

    • I did waking nightmare, and I am level 23 but I can't get the quest to kill a giant

    • ^I had the same problem today. What I did was I went to my Flakreath house and waited for 24 hours. As soon as I went back to Jarl Skald in Dawnstar I got the quest.

    • I think you might have to get a letter from a courier thats an invatation from the jarl. Thats how it happened for me

    • I'm having the same problem on the Xbox 360 edition.

I am level 38 and I did the Waking nightmare quest, killed the giants, and helped the people of the Pale. I still cannot become Thane.

This may happen, if you help people before talking to Jarl and do all the quests. The same happened to me twice in Solitude --> I did all the needed quests first, and then spoke to the Jarl, became thane and bought the house. Yet the questloq still says "Help the people of Solitude 5/5", and I noticed, that it won´t go away from the questlog until I find one more person to help. I did just that, the quest updated to "Help the people of Solitude 6/5" and disappeared.

    • I'm level 50, have completed Walking Nightmare, killed some giants, and helped some people. The 'collect reward from Skald' entry is gone. I've been named Thane.. and I can't buy the property in The Pale, which is the one I really want. Googling hasn't been helpful. If anyone has found a way around this, please let me know.

    • I'm also having problems. I'm level 47, completed Walking Nightmare, and helped people. I don't remember if I've completed quests to kill giants or not, since I'm just starting playing again after an absence. How do I check if I've been named Thane and, if I have, I also need to know how to get the property.  I've tried using console codes to make the Jarl friendly and to add the charter to my inventory, but neither worked.

I don´t know if there´s any way to check it out, but if you are a thane, your housecarl will be waiting for you in the Jarl´s house, go check it out? The property is purchiseable from the Jarl´s Steward, usually. The option to buy should pop out when talking to the Jarl´s steward.

    • you get windstad manor from morthal not dawnstar.

    • I think you need the Hearthfire DLC first.

        Loading editor
    • That first post was over two years ago, but you don't need Hearthfire to be Thane (only to then get the Housecarl Gregor and buy the land for Heljarchen Hall after).

    • Im level 329. In my attempt to 100% the game, I never bought the home in Dawnstar. Now, there is no diialogue to purchase said home. I am already the thane.

      Maybe this can help :

      1) You can only buy a homestead if you have Heartfire.

      2) Did you do the quest "kill a giant" for the jarl?

      3) Did you talk to his steward?

      4) If nobody at the jarl's home offers to sell you something, do some fetch quests in your journal. It usually help them update their dialogs (I did it two times to obtain the offer).

    • I cant even help the people. I have the quest but cannot find anyone to help. I gave a drink to Karl and ir still says 1/3 after i escorted the girl back to dawnstar but it wont say 2/3. Also i cant assist Ari because she was killed by a dragon and now i cant deliver the note to the jarl. And i cant find one of the mine owners and the other one doesnt ask for help.

The big problem with Falkreath and Dawnstar is the frequent random attacks that kills inhabitants. I don't know what girl you're talking about, maybe a quest that don't count for Dawnstar itself but if I read correctly you can still :

      - Sell iron ore to Beitild if you did not kill her for the DB (she can be at home, in her mine or in front of it)

      - Sell quicksilver ore to Leigelf, Beitild's ex who own the mine in the opposite of hers (if you don't find him outside, try inside his mine or near his home)

      - Report Cicero to a guard (at farm Loreius, and preferably if you don't intend to do the DB questline)

      - Invest 500 in shops if you have the perk (the smith and the alchemist)

      - Find the ring of pure mixture for Frida (the alchemist)

      - Bring the book Nightfall of the Sentinel to the smith

      - Bring Fine cut void salts to captain Wayfinder ( he's on the boat, center of Dawnstar).

In order to become thane you have to do 3/3 quests, do the quest Waking Nightmare and being lvl 22 at least to obtain the quest kill a giant from the jarl. Hope it helps.
