The Treaty of the Armistice was an ancient law between the Septim Empire and that of Morrowind. In essence, it involved the incorporation of Morrowind into the Empire, as long as certain traditional customs of the Dunmer were allowed to continue. As such, Morrowind is unique amongst the Provinces in that it "retains exceptional power to define local law by reference to ancient Great House precedents".[1] [2]

One particular concession made to the Septim Empire, was that Barenziah, the Princess of Mournhold, was to become the first Queen of Morrowind,[3] and her imperial consort, Symmachus, was to be made King.[4]
