Infobox BetaEdit

Hi there! I’m Andrew, one of the community managers at Wikia. If you don’t know me, here’s my CC profile. I like baseball, laying on the beach with no plans or goals for the day, and climbing things.

We have a new beta project out, and since it's going to be critical to Wikia's future, we're asking for your help.

We want to partner with your community (and a couple others) and collaborate on a redesign of your existing infoboxes. It’s not a small task, but it’s one that we think we can get done relatively quickly and efficiently. Our engineers - both here in San Francisco and in Poland - will get hands-on with your community and work with your team to redesign the infoboxes.

You can read more here in the forum (and head to the sandbox to give it a whirl), but the tl:dr version: our current infobox structure translates very poorly to mobile experiences, and mobile is where Wikia’s growth lies. We came up with a solution that will take a bit of effort, but will pay significant dividends in the near future. What we're hoping is that we can use this community to test out its strengths and limitations while we get it from “beta” to “full feature”.

What you get out of the deal:

  • Wikia engineers who will work directly with your community to update the code that underpins your infoboxes
  • Access to staff for feedback, and our promise that your ideas will be taken seriously
  • A head-start on this change and therefore a significant upgrade in your community’s visibility

What we get out of the deal:

  • Several fresh sets of eyes that can help us understand how this will be used by the average Wikian
  • A test community that will let us track how the new infobox structure is used by visitors and viewers
  • The opportunity to share this initiative’s successes (and failures, I’m sure!) with the wider Wikia community and show them that it’s a smart plan for our shared mobile future

Please talk this over with your admin team and let me know. I’m happy to answer any and all questions about this - please use my wall or just keep the conversation going here.

RE: Infobox Beta Edit

We are not opposed to the idea, we just have questions and we want/need to make sure the community is OK with this. We have gotten them involved in smaller things in the past, us being a beta for infoboxes is a little bigger.

How about you? You think we should do this?-Cheatcodechamp (talk) 22:08, May 20, 2015 (UTC)

I've read the related thread on CC. It looks like it is far from done right now and some of our more sophisticated templates like DragonShouts will probably not work at first. If we do opt in however, we can apply some pressure so they will make tables like these possible. It's probably better than not joining and facing the change unprepared, when it's rolled out globally. My only question would be if we can have both the new and old system in use at the same time (I suppose it does) so we can test this on the less complicated templates like SkyrimNPCs. — Flightmare @Wikia (talk) 23:25, May 20, 2015 (UTC)
I like the idea of making infoboxes more mobile-friendly. Well, infoboxes don't exactly cause problems on mobile, but it's a pain to have to scroll through them to get to the actual article, especially with the longer ones. I looked at some of the examples Ducksoup posted on the Community Test Wiki on both mobile and desktop; it seems a fair bit more efficient to me, although a couple things could be changed. —Atvelonis (talk) 01:50, May 21, 2015 (UTC)
Hi there, I'm Rafal - one of the engineers at Wikia working on new Infoboxes Project. We would like to help you with testing new infoboxes. As a demonstration we did change all your NPCs infobox templates to the new markup and applied styling to make them look similar to the previous ones. All you custom themeing was also applied. Please check them out and give us your feedback. If you would like we are happy to help you with other infobox templates on ElderScrolls community. Rafal Leszczynski (talk) 14:41, May 26, 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, they look good so far. — Flightmare @Wikia (talk) 15:40, May 27, 2015 (UTC)

Beta templates Edit

Hey Flight, I think there is a little issue with the beta templates. On, say, Gwilandor, if I add the {{Missing}} template to it it doesn't seem to be adding the category Pages Missing Data. The template still appears in the infobox, it just doesn't add any categories, which is very unhelpful. Do you know how this could be fixed? —Atvelonis (talk) 01:21, June 4, 2015 (UTC)

I notice the same applies to the missing image category. So this might indicate any category inclusions inside the new templates don't work. I'll forward this to the Beta program maintainers. — Flightmare @Wikia (talk) 14:06, June 4, 2015 (UTC)

Disabling the anti-YouTube filter Edit

The YouTube filter has been blocking me from making edits to The Elder Scrolls: Legends page. I mentioned this on Atvelonis' talkpage and gave my reasons as to why the filter should be disabled there. Please disable it as soon as you can, thank you. ☞ Rim < Talk | Updates | Edits > 23:02, June 15, 2015 (UTC)
