Background[]
The Wood Elf brewing town of Willowgrove is trying to expand their beehives. They've hired help to clear the forest. This help appears to have suffered some difficulties.

Walkthrough[]
In Willowgrove, you will find a Bosmer named Firiliril standing by a broken cart. She will tell you that the town is looking to expand their honey business and has hired help to clear some of the forest, but there is a problem. She will direct you to Treethane Ranneth for more information.
The treethane is in a house a bit to the south. Speak with her and she will tell you that if the mage Pircalmo does not complete his contract soon and clear the trees, he will be forced to eat his wife. The wife in question, Alanya Softpetals, has been taken hostage to ensure Pircalmo fulfills his end of the bargain. Ranneth does not wish for this to happen and will ask you to investigate the reasons behind the delay. Speaking with Alanya will get you no useful information, so you should head to Pircalmo's tent to the south and read his notes. There are several notes on the table, but the important one is On Pircalmo's Emergency Reversal. It describes a spell to figure out what went wrong in case something bad happens. After reading it, Pircalmo will show up and ask what you are doing in his tent; speak with him and he will tell you something has gone horribly wrong. He will ask you to look for the ingredients to the spell you found while he tries to mitigate the problem.
You will need a piece of Heartwood, five Torchbug Thoraxes and some Hoarvor Chitin. You can ask Treethane Ranneth where to get these things; torchbugs can be found aplenty in the village, most houses will have some useless heartwood lying around and you can get the Hoarvor Chitin from Sarolion-Sells-All in the west of town. Once you have everything, head back to Pircalmo; he will be on the hill south of town. On your way there, you may notice the forest is full of atronachs. Pircalmo will tell you that he just wanted to use a simple magical force to clear the trees, but something went wrong and summoned the atronachs. He will take the ingredients off of you and attempt to perform the ritual to find out what went wrong and undo the damage, but something will go wrong as he tries that. Talk to him afterward and he will tell you that in order to send the atronachs back, he will need a core from each atronach type.
Head into the forest for some atronach hunting. You will probably have to kill multiple of each type of atronach before one of them will drop a core. Collect one core of each atronach type, then head back to Pircalmo. You will see a confrontation between him and Treethane Ranneth; she considers the contract broken because of the Daedra in the forest. Talk to Pircalmo and he will tell you that something likely corrupted his spell here; he normally fails at everything, so summoning dozens of atronachs is well beyond his capabilities. He will give you his staff of finding to locate the source of the corruption while he goes back to the village to try and save his wife.
The source can be found to the southwest, in Willowgrove Cavern. Using the wand will summon a light that will guide you to the cavern. Head in and fight your way through the Daedra to the shrine at the end of the cave, where you will find a talking dog called Barbas. Speak with him and he will tell you that he is the companion to the Daedric Prince Clavicus Vile. The atronachs appeared because as Pircalmo was summoning his magical force, he uttered a wish for something to go well for once in his life, which activated something in the shrine. Barbas will tell you that in order to undo the spell and get rid of the atronachs, you need to smash the altar beside him. This will also allow him to return to his master.
Smash the altar, then return to Willowgrove. You will find that Ranneth is about to kill Alanya; speak with Ranneth and tell her what happened in the woods, and she will agree to free Alanya. She locked Pircalmo in her home until mealtime; she will meet you there. Head to Ranneth's home and free Pircalmo, and then follow him down the ramp to witness Ranneth apologising to Pircalmo and Alanya and offering Pircalmo a permanent job as the town's mage. Speak with Ranneth afterward to finish the quest.
